Chapter 62: Not All Parents Love Their Children

Keke peeked over.

“Huh? Your mom? Calling again to ask for money? Sigh… Your family is just a bunch of bloodsuckers. Why don’t you understand? I’m telling you, listen to me. Just cut ties with them.

“From now on, I’ll be your family!”

Ling Xiaoli glanced at Keke, her heart warming.

Sure enough, Keke knew everything about the original owner. In that case, there was no need to hide anything about the original owner from her anymore.

Ling Xiaoli answered the phone. Before she could even speak, Qian Fanglan hurriedly began,

“Xiaoli, your brother really needs the money urgently. He’s already arranged a time to visit the girl’s family. Look, you’ve already bought a house, and all you’re missing is a car. Can’t you think of another way?”

“If you really don’t have any money, that friend of yours—what’s her name, Keke? I remember she’s pretty wealthy, right? Why don’t you borrow some from her? You make money so quickly anyway. You can just pay her back later!

“If that doesn’t work, your brother recently met a businessman who really likes you. He said that as long as you agree, he’ll give you a house and a car, plus 200,000 yuan every month! Why don’t you think about it?”

………

The room fell into a brief silence.

Keke’s expression was ugly, but she didn’t say anything. She simply reached out and wrapped her arms around Ling Xiaoli.

Ling Xiaoli was completely dazed.

At that moment, her face turned deathly pale, as white as the snow outside the window.

So it was true.

Not all parents loved their children.

She hadn’t believed it before, but now she did.

Ling Xiaoli felt an unbearable pain in her chest.

It hurt so badly that she wanted to scream at the top of her lungs.

It hurt so badly that she wanted to burst into tears.

It hurt so badly that she wanted to destroy everything.

Including herself.

But those emotions disappeared in the blink of an eye, so quickly that it was almost as if they had only been Ling Xiaoli’s imagination.

She shook her head, realizing that this feeling was another remnant of the original owner.

Ling Xiaoli signaled to Keke that she was fine.

Then, holding her phone, she got off the bed and quietly tiptoed over to the window.

Keke looked completely bewildered, having no idea what Ling Xiaoli was trying to do.

Ling Xiaoli opened the window, letting the wind and snow outside pour into the room. Then, with a shiver, she turned on the phone’s speaker.

“Hello? Xiaoli? Ling Xiaoli? Say something. What’s going on?”

Ling Xiaoli’s voice was distant and ethereal.

“Mom, can you hear it?”

She held the phone outside the window.

“Hear what? I can’t hear anything.”

“Listen. This is the sound of the wind. Isn’t it very free?

“I’m on the rooftop of the hotel right now. Mom, tell me, if I just jump down like this, wouldn’t all my troubles disappear?”

There were no sobs or screams. Her voice was so calm and devoid of emotion that it concealed a despair that seemed to seep into her very bones.

Keke’s mouth fell wide open as she stared at Ling Xiaoli as though she had discovered a whole new continent. Ling Xiaoli quickly put a finger to her lips and gestured for her to keep quiet.

Keke understood immediately. She covered her mouth and nodded furiously, her eyes shining brightly.

“X-Xiaoli, don’t do anything stupid. What do you mean, jump or whatever? I think you’ve just been thinking too much lately. As for the car, if you don’t have money for that, at least you should have enough for your living expenses……”

“Mom, which sounds better—the sound of a phone hitting the ground, or the sound of a person hitting the ground~?”

“I-I’m not talking to you anymore. Your brother needs me. I’m hanging up first.”

【Beep, beep】

The moment Keke heard the call disconnect, she immediately jumped off the bed and ran barefoot over to Ling Xiaoli.

“Not bad, Xiaoli! Your acting training on the film set has really paid off!”

Ling Xiaoli stuck out her tongue.

“Just average~”

“Eww, that’s so creepy. By the way, how did you finally come to your senses?”

That was what Keke was truly curious about. She had tried persuading Ling Xiaoli for years without success. How had Xiaoli suddenly come to her senses after they had been apart for only a little over two months?

“The pressure really was huge for me some time ago. I really did have thoughts of ending my life, but luckily, I managed to get through it. And now I’ve figured everything out!”

Although Ling Xiaoli was completely making it up, judging from everything she knew about the original owner now, claiming that the original owner had never had suicidal thoughts would have been nothing but nonsense.
